Lunch boxes & bento boxes
Are Spixal lunch boxes pie warmer safe?
The whole Spixal silicone range is pie warmer safe, including the 3 and 5 Compartment Silicone Bentos, the Silicone Round Bento and the Mini and Midi Snack Boxes. Many Australian workplaces, especially mine sites, have a pie warmer for staff lunches, so you can keep your lunch warm until your meal break.
Which Spixal lunch box is best for my child?
It depends on age and appetite. For kindy and prep, the silicone bentos, the Quad and the Duo are easy for little hands to open. Primary school kids do well with the Roundie, Quad, Duo or Core. Teens and big eaters usually want the 1200ml Core or the 1350ml Duo. Browse by stage in ages 3 to 6, ages 7 to 11 and teen lunch boxes.
Which Spixal bento boxes are leakproof?
Our silicone bentos and the Duo seal every compartment on its own, so yoghurt and dips stay put. The Core stainless steel bento has a silicone seal in its Tritan lid that makes the whole box leakproof and airtight, and the Roundie and Quad lids also seal around the whole box. On those three, pack runny food in a small sealed container.
Are silicone lunch boxes safe for kids?
Yes. Spixal silicone lunch boxes are made from food-grade silicone and are BPA free. Every Spixal product, whether silicone, stainless steel or plastic, is BPA free and food safe certified. Read our Food Safe Promise.
Can Spixal lunch boxes go in the microwave or dishwasher?
Our silicone bentos go from freezer to microwave or oven, and into the dishwasher. The Core is dishwasher safe but, as stainless steel, it can never go in the microwave. For other bentos, check the care details on each product page. Hand washing in warm soapy water helps everything last longer.
What size lunch box does my child need?
Little kids usually do well with smaller sections, like the 800ml Quad or a silicone bento. Most primary school kids need room for recess and lunch, so 800ml to 1200ml suits them. Teens and hungry kids often need 1200ml or more, like the Core or the 1350ml Duo. Our guide on choosing the right bento box goes through it in more detail.
How do I keep my child's lunch cold until lunchtime?
Pack the lunch box in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack, and keep it out of the sun. A frozen drink bottle or frozen yoghurt pouch can double as an extra ice pack. Our Commute lunch bags have a dedicated ice pack compartment.
How do I get the smell out of a lunch box?
Wash it in warm soapy water as soon as it comes home, and let the lid and seals dry completely apart from the base. For lingering smells, soak it in warm water with a splash of white vinegar, or leave a bicarb soda paste on for 15 minutes before rinsing. Drying in the sun also helps.
What is Crunch and Sip, and what container should I use?
Crunch and Sip (also called Fruit Break, Brain Break or Munch and Crunch) is a short break in class for fruit or veg and water. A small separate container makes it easy. Our snack boxes include the 550ml Flexi and the silicone Mini and Midi boxes. Read the best Crunch and Sip container for school.
Backpacks & school bags
What size school bag does a primary school child need?
Around 28L suits most Australian primary school kids, because they carry lunch, a drink bottle, a library book, a homework folder and a jumper every day. Our Axis Kids Backpack is 28L. Check the bottom of the bag sits above their hips. More in how to choose a school backpack.
What size backpack does a toddler need for daycare?
Big enough for spare clothes, rest-time bedding, a drink bottle, a hat and lunch. Our 25L Junior backpack has three compartments, so a full daycare day fits without extra bags. Shop preschool and daycare backpacks.
Which Spixal backpacks fit a laptop?
The Axis Kids Backpack and our high school range, the Daily, Flex, Momentum and Commute, all have a padded sleeve for a 15-inch laptop. Compare them in best high school backpack.
How do I wash a Spixal backpack or lunch bag?
Wipe over the water-resistant lining with a damp cloth, or machine wash on a gentle cycle and let it air dry.
Can I buy a matching backpack, library bag and pencil case?
Yes. The Axis library bag and pencil case come in the same colours as the Axis Kids Backpack, and an Axis Kids Backpack Bundle gets you all three together for $79.99. Our Junior prints also have a matching lunch bag and pencil case.
