Toddler lunch boxes that little hands can open on their own. Daycare and kindy educators can't open every lid in the room, so the best toddler lunch box is one your child can manage alone, with small sections sized for little appetites and seals that keep yoghurt and fruit where they belong.

Which toddler lunch box should I choose?

  • The Duo bento and food jar (1350ml): A single one-clip lid that's easy to open, four compartments that each seal on their own, and a 200ml insulated food jar with a lift-up lid instead of a screw top. Shop the Duo
  • Silicone bentos: Soft, flexible lids that are easy for small fingers, with a leakproof seal around every section. The 5 compartment silicone bento suits grazers and toddlers who don't like their food touching.
  • The Quad (800ml): A smaller bento with four removable compartments that reconfigure to 3, 2 or 1 as your toddler's appetite grows.
  • Mini snack boxes (100ml): Just the right size for a handful of berries, crackers or a dip for morning tea. See all snack boxes.
  • Reusable yoghurt and food pouches: For yoghurt, puree and smoothies, without buying squeeze packs every week. Shop reusable yoghurt pouches.

What to look for in a daycare lunch box

  • Easy-open lids: one clip or a soft silicone edge your child can manage alone.
  • Small, separate sections: toddlers eat in small amounts, and many won't eat food that's touching.
  • Leakproof seals: so yoghurt and juicy fruit don't soak the spare clothes in their bag.
  • BPA free and food safe: every Spixal lunch box is, as part of our Food Safe Promise.
  • Easy to label and recognise: bright colours help your child spot their own lunch box on the shelf.

Toddler lunch box ideas

Keep it simple and use one section per food group:

  • Something filling: mini sandwiches, pasta, rice balls or a cheese and veggie muffin.
  • A protein: cheese cubes, egg, chicken or hummus.
  • Fruit: berries, banana, or grapes cut into quarters lengthways.
  • Veg: steamed carrot or cucumber sticks, corn or peas.
  • A little extra: yoghurt in a reusable pouch or crackers in a Mini snack box.

Cut round foods like grapes and cherry tomatoes into small pieces, and check your centre's rules, as most daycares are nut free. Pack the lunch box in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack, and pair it with a daycare backpack and a kids drink bottle.

Toddler Lunch Boxes FAQs

What is the best lunch box for a toddler?

One your toddler can open on their own, with small sections and leakproof seals. The Duo's one-clip lid and individually sealed compartments, and our soft silicone bentos, are both made for little hands.

Keep the first school lunches familiar while your child learns the new routine. Choose foods they can manage in the time available and practise opening and closing the box at the table. Ask the centre whether it stores food in a fridge and whether snacks need separate containers. A box can be easy to open without every child mastering it immediately, so allow a little practice and ask educators how lunch is going.

What size lunch box does a toddler need?

Toddlers eat small amounts, so small sections matter more than total size. A bento with 4 or 5 compartments lets you pack a little of everything, and a 100ml Mini snack box covers morning tea.

A small amount in several sections can look more manageable than one large pile. There is no need to fill a bento to its maximum capacity. Use familiar foods prepared for the child's age and ability, and ask the centre how meals and snacks are served. A separate small container may be easier when food is offered at different times. Watch what comes home and adjust portions around the child's actual routine.

Can my toddler open the Duo by themselves?

The Duo is designed to make opening easier: the bento has a single clip and the 200ml food jar uses a lift-up closure instead of a screw top. Whether a child can use it independently depends on their skills and practice.

Practise with the container on a table rather than held in the air. Let your child release the closure, lift the lid, put it back and close it again with a small amount of food inside. Opening is only half the job; being able to pack leftovers away matters too. Children develop these skills at different rates, so an easy closure is helpful without being a guarantee of independent use.

Are Spixal toddler lunch boxes leakproof?

Yes. The Duo and our silicone bentos seal each compartment on its own, so yoghurt and fruit stay put. The Quad's lid seals around the whole box.

There are two separate questions here: can food escape into the bag, and can it move between compartments? A seal around the outside deals with the first; individual section seals deal with the second. Keep food clear of the sealing edges and close the lid fully. If a meal combines crackers with a runny dip, choose individually sealed sections or put the dip in its own closed container.

Are Spixal toddler lunch boxes BPA free?

Yes. Every Spixal lunch box is BPA free and food safe certified.

BPA-free describes a material claim; it does not mean every item can be heated or washed in the same way. Use the care instructions for the exact container, including its lid, seals and removable parts. Before packing lunch, check that the closure is clean and the container is in sound condition. Choose the material around the job it needs to do, particularly if you want to reheat food at work.
