School bags for boys and girls

Every Spixal school bag is made for any child, so let them choose. For girls, the Axis in Pink, Purple or Leopard and the Junior Unicorn or Butterfly are favourites. For boys, the Axis in Camo, Navy Orange, Blue or Black and the Junior Dinosaur Roar, Monster Truck or Let's Play are the most popular. The Axis two-tone colours are designed to look just as good in Year 6 as in Year 2, so they won't be outgrown.

What size school bag does my child need?

Australian kids carry their whole day to and from school, with no lockers and no cafeteria. That's why our primary school bag is 28L: big enough for the lunch bag, drink bottle, library book, homework folder, pencil case and a winter jumper, without swallowing a six-year-old. Little ones starting school usually suit our 25L Junior school bag, which is lighter and shorter in the back. For the right fit, measure from the base of the neck to hip level, and make sure the bottom of the bag sits above the hips. High schoolers carrying a laptop and textbooks usually need 22L to 36L, depending on how heavy their day is.

How to tell a good school bag from a cheap one

  • It isn't heavy before it's packed: We use 600D fabric rather than 900D. A popular 900D school bag we weighed came in at 670g empty, up to 250g more than ours before a single book goes in.
  • Wide, padded straps and a padded back: So the bag sits close and doesn't dig in by 9am.
  • Compartments that keep the heavy stuff close to the back: Books and laptop against the spine, snacks and small things up front.
  • Zips and stitching that last: These are the first things to fail on a poorly made bag. Across our range, returns sit under 1 percent.

Build a matching school kit

The Axis comes in the same colours as our library bags and pencil cases, and an Axis Kids Backpack Bundle gets you all three and saves you money. Junior school bags pair with a matching lunch bag in our backpack and lunch bag bundles. Add a lunch bag that fits inside and a kids lunch box and the whole school day is sorted. Getting ready for the new year? Everything is in our back to school shop. Shopping for a younger child? See our preschool backpacks, or browse every kids backpack by stage.

School Bags for Primary & High School FAQs

What is the best school bag for primary school in Australia?

One with padded straps, a bottle pocket and room for the lunch bag, library book and jumper. For Kindergarten (Prep) and Year 1, the 25L Spixal Junior backpack weighs 400g empty. From Year 2, the 28L Spixal Axis Kids Backpack adds a 15-inch laptop sleeve, a bottle pocket that fits up to 1L, and a matching library bag and pencil case.

Use the school packing list and your child's fit together. A laptop, A4 folder and sports kit change the space needed, but a bigger bag still needs to sit comfortably when loaded. Check strap adjustment, access to the bottle pocket and whether your child can manage the zips. If the daily load is small, do not choose extra capacity simply because the next school year is approaching.

Lay out the things your child takes on an ordinary day before choosing extras. A lunch box, bottle and separate fruit-break container usually need a place of their own; a library bag might only travel on borrowing day. Check whether the school supplies cutlery and whether lunch stays in the classroom or a fridge. That tells you what needs to fit together and which pieces you can leave off the shopping list.

What size school bag is best for primary school?

Around 28L suits most Australian primary school kids, because they carry lunch, a drink bottle, a library book, a homework folder and a jumper every day. Check the bottom of the bag sits above their hips.

Check the real packing list: A4 folders, lunch, a jumper and a device take up different kinds of space. A smaller-capacity bag may be enough when equipment stays at school, while a fuller daily load needs more room. The child still needs a comfortable fit with that load inside. Do not use a litre number as a reason to keep adding items; review the bag each week for things that no longer need to travel.

What is the best school bag for prep or kindergarten?

A light bag that sits above the hips and is easy for small hands to open. Our Junior school bags are 25L, weigh 400g empty, have three compartments and come in bold prints kids can spot on the hook, with a matching lunch bag and pencil case.

Use the wording on your own school's information pack when choosing supplies. Starting ages, orientation days and the equipment list can differ, even within the same state. A useful trial is a practice lunch at home: get the bag out, open the container, eat, close everything and put it away. That often shows whether a lid or zip needs more practice before the first full day.

Isn't 28L too big for a primary school bag?

A 28L bag can suit a primary-school packing list, but it is not the right fit for every child. Check what the school expects them to carry and how the loaded bag sits on their back.

Age ranges are a starting point, not a fit guarantee. Check the actual school load, your child's height and how the bag sits when packed. A younger child carrying bedding may need more storage than an older child with a locker. Reassess the setup when the routine changes, such as starting a laptop program or adding after-school sport. You can often change the packing arrangement before deciding the whole bag needs replacing.

How heavy should a packed school bag be?

Keep the packed school bag as light as practical and choose a size that fits the child comfortably. The everyday load and how the bag sits matter more than a single weight target.

Pack only what is needed that day and check how the loaded bag feels on the student. Keep heavier items close to the back and use both shoulder straps. If carrying it is uncomfortable, reduce the load and review the fit rather than relying on a percentage alone. Ask the school about leaving books or equipment on site when appropriate. Persistent discomfort is a reason to seek individual advice from a suitable health professional.

Do you have school bags for boys and girls?

Yes. Every Spixal school bag suits any child. Popular picks for girls include the Axis in Pink, Purple or Leopard and the Junior Unicorn or Butterfly. Popular picks for boys include the Axis in Camo, Navy Orange, Blue or Black and the Junior Dinosaur Roar, Monster Truck or Let's Play.

Choose from the features and colours the child likes, without treating a print as restricted to boys or girls. It is useful to narrow the options by size and daily load first, then let them pick the design. A bag they recognise quickly is easier to find among a row of hooks. Check the matching lunch pieces separately if coordinating the kit matters; colour choice does not change the capacity or fit.

Which school bag is best for high school?

The Daily for simple days, the Flex if the school uses phone-lock pouches, the Momentum for the heaviest loads and the Commute for senior students on public transport. All four fit a 15-inch laptop.

Ask about the timetable before choosing: a laptop-heavy day, sport day and day with only a few books can need different storage. Check whether there are lockers and whether the school uses a locking phone pouch. Then compare the backpack compartments with those requirements. A student moving into high school may appreciate a plainer design, but the useful features are the ones that match what they actually carry between classes.

Can I get a matching library bag and pencil case?

Yes. The Axis library bag and pencil case come in the same eight colours as the Axis Kids Backpack, on their own or together in a bundle. Junior school bags have a matching lunch bag and pencil case in the same print.

Match the range name as well as the colour. A printed Junior piece and a plain Axis piece can look good together, but they are different designs. Open the individual product photos to see the complete print and trim. If siblings like the same design, add a name inside each bag and on removable lunch pieces so matching gear still finds its way to the right person.
