Kids Backpacks FAQs

What is the best school backpack for each school year?

The 25L Spixal Junior backpack (400g empty) suits daycare, preschool, Kindergarten and Year 1. From Year 2 to Year 6, the 28L Spixal Axis Kids Backpack (520g empty) adds a padded 15-inch laptop sleeve and a bottle pocket that fits up to 1L. In high school, choose The Daily, Flex, Momentum or Commute depending on the load.

Age ranges are a starting point, not a fit guarantee. Check the actual school load, your child's height and how the bag sits when packed. A younger child carrying bedding may need more storage than an older child with a locker. Reassess the setup when the routine changes, such as starting a laptop program or adding after-school sport. You can often change the packing arrangement before deciding the whole bag needs replacing.

Ask about the timetable before choosing: a laptop-heavy day, sport day and day with only a few books can need different storage. Check whether there are lockers and whether the school uses a locking phone pouch. Then compare the backpack compartments with those requirements. A student moving into high school may appreciate a plainer design, but the useful features are the ones that match what they actually carry between classes.

Do Spixal backpacks have a name tag?

Yes. Junior and Axis backpacks have an inner name tag with a spot to write your child's name.

Write the name where a teacher or your child can find it, and label the separate lunch bag and bottle too. If two children have the same print, an additional familiar marker can help them spot the difference quickly. Avoid putting unnecessary personal details on the outside. Check labels during the term, especially after washing, and update them if the bag is passed on to a sibling.

Are Spixal backpacks water resistant?

Junior and Axis backpacks have a water-resistant inner lining. The Junior lining wipes clean, or you can machine wash the bag on a gentle cycle.

Water resistant is not the same as waterproof. Keep books and electronics protected from a leaking bottle and avoid leaving the bag exposed to heavy rain. Wipe small spills promptly, then let the lining dry before repacking it. If the bag gets soaked, empty it so damp fabric is not sitting against paper overnight. Follow the care directions for that model; an inner lining does not make every washing method suitable.

What is the best school backpack for kids in Australia?

The right size for their stage. Spixal sizes its kids backpacks by stage: the 25L Spixal Junior (400g empty) for daycare to the first years of school, the 28L Spixal Axis Kids Backpack with a 15-inch laptop sleeve for primary school and beyond, and The Daily, Flex, Momentum and Commute for high school. Every Spixal backpack has padded straps, a bottle pocket and a 12-month warranty.

Use the school packing list and your child's fit together. A laptop, A4 folder and sports kit change the space needed, but a bigger bag still needs to sit comfortably when loaded. Check strap adjustment, access to the bottle pocket and whether your child can manage the zips. If the daily load is small, do not choose extra capacity simply because the next school year is approaching.

Lay out the things your child takes on an ordinary day before choosing extras. A lunch box, bottle and separate fruit-break container usually need a place of their own; a library bag might only travel on borrowing day. Check whether the school supplies cutlery and whether lunch stays in the classroom or a fridge. That tells you what needs to fit together and which pieces you can leave off the shopping list.

What is the best backpack for prep and kindergarten?

A light bag your child can recognise and open on their own. The Spixal Junior backpack weighs 400g empty, has three compartments and deep side bottle pockets, and comes in six bold prints like Butterfly, Unicorn and Dinosaur Roar. It has a D-ring for a Spixal magnetic hat clip, and each print has a matching lunch bag.

Use the wording on your own school's information pack when choosing supplies. Starting ages, orientation days and the equipment list can differ, even within the same state. A useful trial is a practice lunch at home: get the bag out, open the container, eat, close everything and put it away. That often shows whether a lid or zip needs more practice before the first full day.

What size backpack does my child need?

For daycare, preschool and the first years of school, the Junior backpack (25L, just 400g empty) is the right fit. Primary school kids suit the 28L Axis. High schoolers need 22L to 36L depending on how much they carry, with a 15-inch laptop sleeve.

Check the real packing list: A4 folders, lunch, a jumper and a device take up different kinds of space. A smaller-capacity bag may be enough when equipment stays at school, while a fuller daily load needs more room. The child still needs a comfortable fit with that load inside. Do not use a litre number as a reason to keep adding items; review the bag each week for things that no longer need to travel.

Are Spixal school bags for girls or boys?

Both. Every style is unisex. Kids choose from six Junior prints or eight Axis colours, so they can pick a bag that feels like theirs.

Choose from the features and colours the child likes, without treating a print as restricted to boys or girls. It is useful to narrow the options by size and daily load first, then let them pick the design. A bag they recognise quickly is easier to find among a row of hooks. Check the matching lunch pieces separately if coordinating the kit matters; colour choice does not change the capacity or fit.

Do Spixal kids backpacks fit a laptop?

The Axis, Daily, Flex, Momentum and Commute all have a padded sleeve or compartment for a 15-inch laptop.

Measure the laptop itself, including any protective case, rather than relying only on the screen-size label. Two devices sold as the same screen size can have different outer dimensions. The sleeve should hold the device without forcing its corners or straining the zip. Keep the charger organised separately and avoid pressing a hard bottle or bulky lunch container against the device when the rest of the bag is packed.

Can I get a matching backpack set?

Yes. The Junior backpacks come in bundles with a matching lunch bag, and the Axis Kids Backpack Bundle includes a matching library bag and pencil case for 20% less than buying each piece separately.

Compare the exact pieces in the set with the individual items you would otherwise buy. A saving is useful when those are the pieces you need; an extra bag that stays in the cupboard adds little value. Prices and promotions can change, so use the current product page and cart total for the final comparison. Check the selected colour as well, because the photos and included pieces belong to that particular listing.

How do I stop my child losing their school hat?

Junior and Axis backpacks have a D-ring for the Magnetic Hat Clip, so the hat stays on the outside of the bag where you'll see it.

Give the hat a regular spot: clipped on before leaving home, back on the clip after play. Practise that movement with your child while the bag is on a hook. Attach the clip where the hat will not drag on the ground or cover a zip they use often. It makes the missing-hat check a quick glance at the bag, rather than another search through the lunch compartment.

How do I clean a Junior backpack?

Junior backpacks have a water-resistant lining you can wipe clean, or you can machine wash the bag on a gentle cycle.

Open every pocket, remove loose paper and shake out crumbs before washing. Wipe small marks first; a whole-bag wash may not be needed every time. Follow the Junior care directions for a machine wash and allow the bag to dry fully, including the bottom corners, before refilling it. Check the name label and straps afterwards. Cleaning on a day when the bag is not needed gives it time to dry properly.

How long does a Spixal backpack last, and is there a warranty?

Spixal backpacks have a 12-month Made To Last warranty for defects in materials and workmanship. There is also a 30-day returns policy for eligible items in Australia. How long a bag lasts depends on its load, use and care; a fixed number of school years is not guaranteed.

The warranty is for the conditions described in the store's warranty policy; it is not a promise that a school bag cannot wear or be damaged. Keep the order details, and photograph a fault clearly if you need the team to assess it. Everyday care, sensible packing and drying the bag after spills help with ongoing use. For returns, check the current eligibility requirements before using the bag or removing its packaging.

How do I fit my child's backpack?

Use both straps, tighten them until the bag sits snug and high against the back with the base above the hips, then clip the chest strap. Pack the heaviest things closest to the back, and re-check the fit each term. Our school backpack guide has the full 5-step fit check.

Try the bag with the usual contents inside, not just when it is empty. Adjust both shoulder straps so the load sits close to the back, and check that your child can walk and reach the zips comfortably. Keep heavier items close to the back and remove things that do not need to travel that day. If the fit still feels wrong, changing the load or bag size is more useful than tightening every strap further.
