I got to the classroom door one morning, said goodbye, and turned to leave when it hit me: the hat wasn't in the bag. Our school had a firm no hat, no play rule, or as they liked to frame it more kindly, "you pack your hat, you play today." I only had just enough time to get to work without being late. I got back in the car and drove all the way home anyway, because I didn't want him missing out on play over a hat.

Why a Hat Is Genuinely Hard to Keep Track Of
A hat doesn't have a natural home inside a backpack the way a lunch box or a water bottle does. It gets shoved in wherever there's room, falls out when the bag's tipped over to find something else, and ends up on a back seat, under a bed, or anywhere except where it needs to be at 8am.
What I Actually Needed
Not a better memory. A way to see, at a glance, whether the hat was packed, before I was already at the school gate. Something on the outside of the bag, not buried inside it, so a quick look on the way out the door told me everything I needed to know.
